The seven-time world champion has since reassured that he will race but the physical toll of porpoising is clear.
Hello everybody and welcome back to another day of Formula 1 Qualifying! Here, we'll have our Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying live blog, where we'll bring you all the latest updates from Montreal on Saturday ahead of the ninth race of the 2022 Formula 1 season taking place this Sunday afternoon.
Max Verstappen will be hoping to expand his 21-point advantage over teammate Sergio Perez at the top of the drivers' standings in Canada after a comfortable win in Baku.
Ferrari will be seeking to rebound following a string of disappointing finishes, the most recent of which was a double retirement in Baku, with Charles Leclerc suffering an engine failure and Carlos Sainz pushed out due to a hydraulics issue.
Lewis Hamilton won the race the last time Montreal hosted a GP, after Sebastian Vettel was handed a time penalty for inappropriately rejoining the circuit.
Round 9 of the 2022 season comes from Montreal, Canada
Max Verstappen grabs pole, Fernando Alonso is second
Eliminated in Q1: Gasly, Vettel, Stroll, Latifi, Tsunoda
Eliminated in Q2: Bottas, Albon, Perez, Norris, Leclerc
Red Bull's Sergio Perez crashes out in Q2
Charles Leclerc will start the race from the back after taking on new PU components
Those two at the sharp end of the field would be popular - and a headache. Neither are easy to overtake, with the Alpine especially being the cork in the bottle in quite a few recent races. No driver will want to have to make their way past an obdurate Alonso come race day...
As for Ferrari, they have opted to fit even more power unit components to Charles Leclerc's car today. That means his 10-place grid penalty turns into a back of the grid start, and therefore we might not see too much of him in qualifying here.
